Fire Suppression Cleanup for Commercial Kitchens and Buildings
After the Discharge
Wet Chemical and Dry Chemical Cleanup After a Suppression System Goes Off
When a kitchen hood suppression system discharges, it soaks the cooking line in a wet chemical agent that mixes with hot grease to form a foam that has to be wiped up and scrubbed off. When a dry chemical system or extinguisher goes off, fine powder settles on everything in the room and works its way into equipment. Either way, the kitchen or building stays closed until it's cleaned.
KPM Restoration cleans up after both. Our crews remove suppression agent residue, plus the grease and soot a kitchen fire leaves behind, from cooking equipment, prep surfaces, floors, walls, and ceilings. We don't recharge suppression systems or refill extinguishers. Your fire protection contractor does that, and we work around their schedule so you can reopen.
Don't wait on it. Wet chemical agents like Ansul's ANSULEX are alkaline, and dry chemical powder turns mildly corrosive once it picks up moisture, so the sooner the residue comes off, the less it can damage.
Discharges We Clean Up After
- A hood suppression system went off during a grease fire on the cooking line
- The system discharged by accident and the line is covered in agent
- A dry chemical extinguisher was emptied in a kitchen, office, shop, or warehouse
- A fixed dry chemical system discharged in a commercial or industrial space
- Grease and soot from a kitchen fire are on the walls, ceiling, and floors
- Sprinklers or fire hoses added water damage on top of the residue
What Our Suppression Cleanup Covers
Wet Chemical Residue
We remove the foamy agent residue a kitchen hood system leaves on ranges, fryers, griddles, prep tables, and the surfaces around the line, then rinse so nothing is left behind.
Dry Chemical Powder
We HEPA-vacuum settled powder, then wash surfaces with a neutralizing solution matched to the type of dry chemical. ABC extinguisher powder turns mildly acidic when it picks up moisture, so it should come off fast.
Kitchen Grease Cleanup
We degrease floors, walls, ceilings, and equipment exteriors, including the grease film a kitchen fire spreads well past the cooking line.
Smoke and Soot
If there was a fire, we clean soot and treat smoke odor in the kitchen and the rest of the building, not just the area the system covered.
Water Damage
Water from sprinklers or fire hoses gets extracted and dried by the same company, so you're dealing with one contractor instead of two.
Insurance Documentation
We photograph the discharge, the affected areas, and the cleanup, and prepare an itemized estimate your adjuster can review.
Who Does What
What KPM Cleans and What Your Other Contractors Handle
Getting a commercial kitchen back in service after a discharge usually takes three trades. Here's how the work splits.
KPM Restoration
Suppression agent residue, dry chemical powder, grease, soot, and water cleanup on floors, walls, ceilings, cooking equipment, and prep areas.
Your Fire Protection Contractor
Recharging and resetting the suppression system, refilling or replacing extinguishers, and finding out why the system went off. KPM does not recharge systems or extinguishers.
Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning
Grease inside the hood, the exhaust ductwork, and the rooftop fan. We refer commercial kitchen ductwork cleaning to Duct Kings.
Commercial kitchen hood and duct cleaning by Duct KingsHow Fire Suppression Cleanup Works
Cleanup follows the safety steps in manufacturer cleanup guidance: power and fuel off, surfaces cooled, then clean.
Call and Shut Down
Call our 24/7 line. Before any cleaning starts, fuel to the cooking equipment has to be off and the hood and appliance controls de-energized. Wet chemical agent and its residue can conduct electricity, so we confirm power is off before we touch anything.
Assess and Document
We walk the space, note where agent, powder, grease, and soot landed, and photograph everything for your insurance claim. We'll point out food and cooking oil the agent touched so you can throw it out.
Remove the Residue
Once surfaces have cooled to room temperature, we wipe up wet chemical foam and scrub with hot, soapy water, and we HEPA-vacuum dry chemical powder and neutralize the surfaces it settled on.
Degrease the Kitchen
We clean grease from floors, walls, ceilings, and equipment exteriors. The inside of the hood and the exhaust ductwork is a separate job for a kitchen exhaust cleaning company.
Rinse, Dry, and Hand Off
Surfaces get rinsed and dried completely before equipment is turned back on. Your fire protection contractor then recharges and resets the suppression system.

“I’ve been in the property management business for over 20 years, and in that time I’ve worked with many restoration companies. KPM Restoration is hands down the best I’ve ever dealt with. From the first call through the completion of the job, their team was professional, responsive, and incredibly thorough. They communicated clearly, showed up when they said they would, and handled the entire process with a level of organization and care that is rare in this industry. Restoration work often happens during stressful situations, and KPM made the process smooth and manageable. Their workmanship and attention to detail were excellent, and they treated the property as if it were their own. If you’re looking for a restoration company that is reliable, efficient, and truly knows what they’re doing, I would highly recommend KPM Restoration.”

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon does wet chemical residue need to be cleaned up?
As soon as possible. The Ansul R-102 owner's manual says its alkaline agents should be cleaned from kitchen surfaces within 24 hours of a discharge. Call once the fire department or your fire protection contractor clears the kitchen.
Can we start cooking again after the suppression system goes off?
Not until the kitchen is cleaned and your fire protection contractor has recharged and reset the system. Ansul's R-102 owner's manual also says surfaces should be rinsed and allowed to dry completely before equipment is turned back on.
Do you recharge the suppression system or refill extinguishers?
No. Recharging, resetting, and inspecting suppression systems and extinguishers is work for a fire protection contractor. We clean up the agent and the mess around it, and we coordinate timing with them.
Can our staff clean it up themselves?
For a small accidental discharge with no fire, the Ansul R-102 owner's manual gives kitchen staff cleanup steps: shut off fuel and power, let surfaces cool, wipe up the foam, scrub with hot, soapy water, then rinse and let everything dry. Call us when a fire left grease and soot behind, the agent or powder covered a large area, water is involved, or you need the cleanup documented for an insurance claim.
Is dry chemical extinguisher powder harmful to equipment?
It can be. The monoammonium phosphate powder in ABC extinguishers, often color-coded yellow, turns mildly acidic when it picks up moisture, and it melts into a coating on surfaces hotter than 300°F. Pyro-Chem's dry chemical cleanup bulletin says to clean it up promptly and shut off electrical equipment in the area first. For registers, POS terminals, and other electronics, it also suggests asking the equipment manufacturer for cleanup recommendations.
Do you clean the hood and exhaust ductwork?
No. Grease inside the hood and exhaust ductwork is cleaned by a kitchen exhaust cleaning company, and we refer that work to Duct Kings. We handle the kitchen itself: floors, walls, ceilings, and equipment.
Do you clean up after an Ansul system goes off?
Yes. We clean up after Ansul and other brands of wet chemical kitchen systems, and after dry chemical systems and extinguishers. KPM isn't affiliated with any system manufacturer, and the recharge is done by your fire protection contractor.
Will insurance cover suppression system cleanup?
It depends on your policy and what set the system off. We document the discharge, the affected areas, and the cleanup with photos and an itemized estimate your adjuster can review.
